災いと幸福には決まった入り口があるわけではなく、人が招き寄せるものであり、舌三寸（ちょっとした言葉）によって人生を誤る者が多いのは、みなこれ欲のなすところである。その勧善懲悪の教えとして、「舌切雀殿のお宿はどこですか、チョンチョン」と語り継がれた赤本によって、子どもたちの目と耳を楽しませるのも、災いと幸福の因果応報、口は災いの門であることを示し、その根を断ったゆえんを示した名作として、今でも廃れない昔話、一生の栄えを描いた物語を、眠気覚ましとして備えるのみ。
