その形勢はまるで天地をひっくり返すかと思われるほど恐ろしく、市中側（守備側）の大将は、土屋・蔵の神・厚壁・鬼瓦の兜をかぶり、観音開きの大鎧を身につけ、土台の石を馬に乗りこなし、丸太の槍を小脇に抱えて、夜討ちと見るや否や、無二無三に揺られる中へ突き入ったが、何ともなりようもなく、たちまちいくつもの深手を負って崩れ立ち、引き退いた。入れ替わって馳せ出たのは、敷き瓦・巴の助・棟木・牛の助・鴨居・戸・障子・平屋安全などという一騎当千の面々が、揺高めがけて打ってかかったが、手に立つものはまったくなく、微塵になって敗走した。
鯰方（なまづ方）では悪風がさっと吹いてくるとともに、二陣に控えていた飛び火の勢いが三十七か所一度に火の手を上げたので、煙と炎が天を焦がし、深夜もさながら昼中のように、あちこち八方へ焼け立て、火花を散らして戦うのに遅れをとり……

The situation was so terrifying it seemed as though heaven and earth were being overturned. The commander of the city's defenders wore a helmet adorned with earthen walls and demon roof tiles, donned great armor fashioned like double-opening Buddhist altar doors, mounted a foundation stone as his steed, and tucked a log as a lance under his arm. Seeing a night attack coming, he charged headlong into the shaking, but to no avail — he immediately suffered wounds in several places, crumbled, and retreated.
Rushing out to replace him were the forces known as Shiki-kawara (floor tiles), Tomoe-no-suke (curved roof tiles), Munagi (ridge beams), Ushi-no-suke (ox beams), Kamoi (door lintels), To (doors), Shoji (sliding screens), and Hiraya Anzen (single-story safety) — warriors worth a thousand men each — who charged at Yuritaka, but none could stand against him and they were shattered to pieces and routed in defeat.
On the catfish side, as an evil wind came gusting in, the forces of leaping fire held in reserve in the second rank raised flames in thirty-seven places all at once, and smoke and fire blazed up, scorching the sky. Even in the deep of night it was as bright as midday; fires raged in all eight directions, scattering sparks as they fought, falling behind not at all...
