【下段の記事】
安政二年（1855年）10月2日夜の午後10時頃、大地震が起こり、山は崩れ、川は埋まり、家屋は倒壊し、蔵も倒れた。水辺を行く船は波に漂い、道を行く馬は足の踏み場もわからない状態となった。その上に大火が八方から燃え上がり、怪我人や死者が非常に多く出た。なおもしばしば余震が続くので、人々は恐れ震えて、
普段は厳重に戸締りしている家も蔵も捨て置いて、葛籠を背負って出てくる泥棒の五右衛門もいれば、釜を担ぐ島屋の番頭もいる。女房の座布団は高級品のようだし、下女のお三の手箱にカラスが鳴いて「悪い」と言っては駆け出し、「良い」と言っては逃げ回る。そこの広場、あちらの空き地へ戸板を敷き、畳を並べて置き、木陰の花ではなく星を主とする宿には、
茅の屋根さえもなく、竹の柱も風流ではない。建て回した塀の陰には、わずかに寝室の様子はあるが、箪笥の金具が鳴るたびに「しまった」と言って驚くのは、あの新婚の昼間とは違っている。そうであれば普段は夜更けに蕎麦を打つ人の風鈴や、群れている犬の鳴き声以外には全く音もない町家の外れが賑わって、昼より明るい提灯に「火の用心」を呼ぶ声と拍子木の音がやかましく、市中はかえって静寂で、人がいるとも思えない有様。
実に前代未聞のことで、後の話の種となることだろう。

On October 2nd, Ansei 2 (1855), around 10 PM, a great earthquake occurred. Mountains collapsed, rivers were buried, houses were destroyed, and storehouses toppled. Boats on the water drifted in the waves, and horses on the roads couldn't find footing. Moreover, fierce fires broke out from all directions, causing tremendous numbers of injured and dead. As aftershocks continued to occur frequently, people trembled in fear and
abandoned their normally securely locked homes and storehouses. Some, like the thief Goemon, came out carrying wicker baskets, while others like Shimaya's clerk shouldered pots. The wife's cushion looked luxurious, and the maid Osan's cosmetic box had crows cawing - when they said "bad," people ran out, and when they said "good," they fled. On squares here and vacant lots there, people laid door panels and arranged tatami mats. In lodgings under trees where stars rather than flowers served as hosts,
there were no thatched roofs and bamboo pillars lacked elegance. Behind hastily erected fences, there was barely the semblance of sleeping quarters, but every time chest hardware rattled, people cried "Oh no!" and were startled - quite different from newlywed daytime behavior. Thus, the outskirts of townhouses, usually quiet except for the wind chimes of late-night soba makers and the barking of stray dogs, became bustling and brighter than daylight with lanterns, while voices calling "Fire prevention!" and the clacking of wooden clappers were noisy. The city center, conversely, became so quiet it seemed uninhabited.
Truly an unprecedented event that will become material for future stories.
