川むかふなる山々川中へゆりくづれ川水をせき
とめ人家へ溢（あふ）れ出し田 畑（ばた）の損（そん）じ少からずたゞ善光寺御堂
のみ破却（はきやく）に及ず扨 越後路（ゑちごじ）の方は柏原関（かしはばらせき）【「ば」が「わ」に「”」がついているのは誤記と思われる】川越後高田
辺又上州口之方は追（おひ）分 沓掛（くつかけ）軽（かる）井 沢（ざは）小諸（こもろ）飯（いゝ）山辺殊に
はげしく南は会（あい）田辺より松下松 代（しろ）上田近辺は筑摩（ちくま）
川を押埋（おしうめ）洪（かう）水一時にをし出し人馬の泣（なき）さけぶ声目も当ら

〽さては剣呑な信州地震・開帳で
人が揺れ身が揺れ揺れ、家の中はぶらぶら
緩んでしまって、しょうがない
あの善光寺のお婆さんに地震が
つぶされたかと思って
土手を作ってみたが、気づいた
困ったものです
ここに弘化四年（1847年）三月二十四日夜四ツ時頃より信州大地震にて、善光寺をはじめ川中島辺りより丹波島渡し、同じく小市の川向こうにある山々が川中へ揺り崩れ、川水をせき止め、人家へ溢れ出し、田畑の損じ少なからず。ただし善光寺御堂のみ破却に及ばず。さて越後路の方は柏原関、川越後高田辺り、また上州口の方は追分・沓掛・軽井沢・小諸・飯山辺りが殊に激しく、南は会田辺りより松代・上田近辺は筑摩川を押し埋め、洪水が一時に押し出し、人馬の泣き叫ぶ声は目も当てられぬばかりなり。さて翌日六ツ時頃ようやく治まり、人々安堵したとのことである。

crushed that old woman of Zenkōji Temple
We tried building an embankment, but realized
what a troublesome situation this is
Here, from around the fourth hour of the night on March 24th of Kōka 4 (1847), a great earthquake struck Shinshū Province. From Zenkōji Temple and the Kawanakajima area to the Tanbajima ferry crossing, and likewise the mountains across the river from Koichi collapsed and tumbled into the river, damming the water flow and causing it to overflow into people's homes. The damage to rice fields and farmland was considerable. However, only the main hall of Zenkōji Temple escaped destruction. Now, toward the Echigo route, around Kashiwabara barrier and Echigo Takada, and toward the Jōshū entrance, particularly around Oiwake, Kutsukake, Karuizawa, Komoro, and Iiyama the shaking was especially severe. To the south, from around Aida to Matsushiro and the Ueda vicinity, the Chikuma River was dammed up, and floods suddenly burst forth. The cries and screams of people and horses were unbearable to witness. The next day, around the sixth hour, things finally calmed down, and people felt relieved.
