めんほくかきりなしとて中将殿そのあかつきほけ
〳〵としてちゝの大しんとのへ参り給ひぬゆふへ
のものとり出てひろうするにきたのかた御らん
して大しん殿はよもし給はしきたのかための
とのしわさにてあるらんかなはすはさてこそあら
めかやうのことを仕つらんことこそほひなけれよし
〳〵おとなせそとてひそめられけり中将殿は御
世の心ちありとてわかかたにさし入さしも出さ
せ給はすありし所のみすかう〳〵おろし奉るを
あけ見給へはさゝがにのいとひき見たしよりく
る人もなけれはちりはいのみつもりてさほに
現代語訳
面目ないことこの上なしとして、中将殿はその明け方、呆然として父の大臣殿のもとへ参られた。夕べの物を取り出して披露するに、北の方が御覧になって「大臣殿はよもやご存知ではないでしょう。北の方の殿のしわざであるのでしょうか。まさか。さてこそあれ、このようなことを仕組んだことこそ憎らしい。よしよし、音を立てるなよ」とて密かに言われた。中将殿は世をはかなく思う気持ちがあるとて、我が方に差し入れ、さして外出もなさらずにいた。以前住んでいた所の御簾をがらがらと下ろし申し上げるのを開けて見ると、蜘蛛の糸が引き見苦しく、訪れる人もないので、塵や埃のみが積もって、さびしく

Feeling utterly ashamed, the Chūjō (Middle Captain) went to his father, the Minister, at dawn in a dazed state. When he brought out and revealed what had happened the evening before, the Kitanokata (Minister's wife) looked at it and said, "The Minister surely does not know about this. Could this be the doing of that other Kitanokata? Surely not. Well then, whoever orchestrated such a thing is truly detestable. Very well, don't make a sound," and spoke in secret. The Chūjō, feeling that the world was fleeting and meaningless, withdrew to his own quarters and hardly ventured out. When he opened the blinds that had been let down with a rattling sound at his former residence, spider webs hung unsightly, no one came to visit, and only dust and dirt had accumulated, making it desolate.
