かけたる夜のふすまならへしまくらのひとつになり
とりひそめたるけしきことびわもふきしふえも
ひとゝころにとりそへことのかしはかたのもとに
もひわのふくしゆのもとにもふえのあなの中に
もうすやうにかきたる物あいとり出して見給へ
はありし人之手なりよみつゝけて見給ふに
なみたもさらにとゝまらすかすかにすみかな
しく
こらへてうことそかなしきふえたけの
うきふし〳〵にねをのみそなく
つらからはわれもこゝろのかわれかし
現代語訳
欠けた夜の臥具や並べた枕が一つになり、とりしまった様子である。琴、琵琶も吹いた笛も一所に取り添え、琴の柏方のもとにも、琵琶の覆手のもとにも、笛の穴の中にも、薄様に書いた物を愛おしく取り出してご覧になると、あの人の手跡である。読み続けてご覧になると、涙もまったく止まらず、かすかに住まいは悲しく。
堪えて憂いことこそ悲しき笛竹の
憂き節々に音をのみぞ泣く
つらいならば我も心の変われかし
英語訳
The broken night bedding and arranged pillows had become one, appearing to be put away. The koto, biwa, and flutes that had been played were all gathered together, and from beneath the koto's bridge, from under the biwa's plectrum guard, and from within the holes of the flutes, he lovingly retrieved papers written on thin paper. When he looked at them, they were in that person's handwriting. As he continued reading and looking at them, his tears would not stop at all, and his dwelling felt faintly sorrowful.
How sad it is to endure these sorrows—the bamboo flute
At each sorrowful joint only weeps its sound
If it is painful, may my heart too change
