なきほれいつとなく御かほをもばれうちしくれ
ておはしますにいまはけしやうはなやかにして
むめのにほひ十五にこうはいのうちきにもゑきの
ひとへにこきくれないの御はかまにはれらかにて

目の内の気高さ悪魔でもあい敵わないほど美しく、なかなか見ることができないだろうと思われて、胸の煙（恋慕の情）はますます募っていらっしゃった。正月の元日の日のことであるが、朝廷奥宮参りをなさった。帝は紫宸殿にお出ましになっていた。柏木卿殿の女御のお姿を拝見申し上げようとして、御簾を引き上げのぞかれると、姫君は日頃は泣き暮れ、いつとなくお顔も腫れぼったくお過ごしになっていたが、今は化粧も華やかにして、梅の香りが薫る十五歳で、紅梅色の内着に萌黄の単衣に濃紅の御袴で、美しく装っていらっしゃった。

Her noble beauty within her eyes was so magnificent that even demons could not compete with it, and thinking that it would be quite difficult to catch sight of her, the smoke in his chest (his passionate longing) continued to grow ever stronger. On New Year's Day, she made a visit to the inner palace. The Emperor had appeared in the Shishinden Hall. Wanting to catch a glimpse of Lord Kashiwagi's consort, he lifted the bamboo blind to peek, and saw that while the princess had spent her days in tears, her face somehow swollen from weeping, now she was beautifully made up and radiant. At fifteen years old, fragrant with the scent of plum blossoms, she was elegantly dressed in an inner robe of plum-blossom pink, a single layer of yellow-green, and deep crimson hakama trousers.
