中将殿大りへ参り給ひてみかとをいま一とみ参
らせんとおもひて一日ゐ給ひけれともれいのしよ
きやうてんにこもりゐさせ給へはあからおよはす日
もくれけれはをとまるといふ御ふえをは御ふみ
かきそへてせいりやうてんのみたなにをかれけり
さてくわいりてんのほそとのゝみすのきはにたち
そひて見給へはしゝうしそくさしておもふ事なく
とをりけれは中将うれしくおほしめしはかま
のこしをひかへたりしゝうたれなるらんしりかひに
ひかふるとおもひてたちとゝまりてみれは中将殿
なりけりさも心もまとひしらせ給ひけるよとおさ
現代語訳
中将殿は大里へ参られて、帝をもう一度お目にかかりたいと思って一日いらっしゃったけれども、例の諸卿殿が奥に籠もっていらっしゃるので、当然のことながら日も暮れてしまったので、「留まる」という御笛を御文に書き添えて、清涼殿の御棚に置かれた。
さて、回里殿の細殿の御簾の際に立ち寄って御覧になると、侍従息が差しかかって何事もなく通りかかったので、中将は嬉しくお思いになり、袴の腰を引き止めた。侍従は「誰であろうか、知り合いに引き止められる」と思って立ち止まって見ると、中将殿であった。「なんと心も乱れてお知らせくださったことよ」と思い

The Middle Captain went to Ōsato, hoping to see His Majesty once more, and stayed there for a day. However, since the various court nobles were secluded in the inner chambers as usual, the day naturally came to an end. So he wrote a letter accompanying the flute piece "Todomaru" (Remaining) and placed it on the shelf in the Seiryōden (Pure and Cool Hall).
