をおもひよろつなみたもれ出て何事もかなしか
りけれは心もすみわたりふくふえもおもしろく
みかとせんじあるやういつとてもさねあきらかふ
くふえのおもしろからぬことはなけれともことさ
らこよひこそおもしろくおほゆれ出やろくひる
むとてせいりやうてんのたなにこちくのふえあり
なをはをとまると申せしをめしよせてこれは
なたかきふえなりうしなふへからす

現代語訳
を思い、よろずの涙も漏れ出て、何事も悲しかったので、心も澄み渡り、笛や笛の音も面白く聞こえた。帝の宣旨があるようで、「いつでもさね明らか、笛の面白くないことはないけれども、ことさら今夜こそ面白く思われる。出でよ六位」と言って、清涼殿の棚に小竹の笛があり、名を「小止まる」と申したものを召し寄せて、「これはなんと貴い笛である。失ってはならない」として、錦の袋に入れながらお与えになった。
英語訳
He thought of various things, and tears flowed out. Everything seemed sorrowful, but his heart became clear and pure, and the flutes and their music sounded delightful. There seemed to be an imperial edict: "Always be clear - there is never a time when flute music is not interesting, but tonight especially it seems delightful. Come forth, sixth-rank officer!" From a shelf in the Seiryōden, he summoned a small bamboo flute called "Kotomaru" and said, "This is indeed a precious flute. It must not be lost," and bestowed it while placing it in a brocade bag.
