かまたは種元（たねもと）悪（あし）きによるべし。故（ゆゑ）に種元（たねもと）を吟味（きんみ）し随分（ずいぶん）能（よき）種（たね）を求（もと）め。飼方（かひかた）

これはまた種元が悪いことによるものと思われる。故に種元を吟味し、できる限り良い種を求め、飼い方に手抜きがないようにすることが第一である。後の患いは前にあると心得るべきである。
蚕の徳によって福者となった話
上州碓氷郡の人で、幼くして父と死に別れ、母に仕えて孝行であった。もとより家が貧しかったので朝夕の炊煙も立てることができず、妻子とともに飢寒に苦しみ日を送っていた。このままでは母を養う手立てもつき、行く末はどうなることかと、つらつら考えて、大きな利益を得ることは養蚕業に及ぶものはない。何とかその技術を覚えて母をも安穏に暮らさせたいと思い、わずかな田畑に桑を植え、専門家に頼ってその飼い方を聞いて、なおも工夫をこらし、さまざまにして飼い立てたところ、五、六年の間に大いに利益し、田畑をもおびただしく買い、近郷に隠れなき富家となって母をも心安く暮らさせ、子孫もなお繁昌させて居るということである。これは孝行の徳を天も感応なさるのであろう。

A Story of Someone Who Became Prosperous Through the Virtue of Silkworms
There was a man from Usui District in Joshu Province who lost his father at a young age and served his mother with filial piety. Since the family was originally poor, they could not even make cooking fires morning and evening, and he spent his days suffering from hunger and cold together with his wife and children. Thinking deeply that at this rate he would have no means to support his mother and wondering what would become of their future, he concluded that nothing surpasses sericulture for obtaining great profits. Wishing somehow to learn the technique and allow his mother to live in peace, he planted mulberry trees in his small fields, relied on experts to learn their rearing methods, and continued to devise improvements, raising silkworms in various ways. Within five or six years he gained great profits, purchased vast amounts of additional farmland, became a wealthy household renowned throughout the neighboring villages, allowed his mother to live comfortably, and his descendants also continued to prosper. This must be because Heaven responds to the virtue of filial piety.
