地震の騒ぎで今だに動揺が落ち着かないから一杯飲みたいものだ。何、我慢することができないとその茶釜へ突っ込まない。なんだ、銚子も見えないと。
ええい、ままよ、冷やでやろう。野陣の茶釜では銚子なくなりとはこのことだろう。

安政二年卯年十月二日夜四ツ時、大地が大いに震い、山が崩れ川が埋まり家を潰し、建物を倒し、渚を漕ぐ舟は波に漂い、道行く人の足の立つ所を知らず。その上に猛火が八方より燃え出て、怪我人、死人おびただしく、なおしばしば余震が来るので、人々恐れおののいて、
普段は鍵をかけて閉ざしている家や蔵も暗いものも捨て置いて、葛籠を背負って出す五右衛門あれば、釜を担ぐ島屋の番頭、女房がござは夜鷹場のような下女のお三が手箱に烏が鳴き悪いといっては駆け出し、良いといっては逃げ走り、そこの広場、あそこの空地へ戸を敷き畳を置き並べ、木の下陰の花ならで星を主のやどりには
茅の屋根だにあらざれば竹の柱も風流ならず建て回したる場屏風にはいささか寝室の様子はあれど、箪笥の環の鳴るたびにすわといって驚くのは、かの新婚の昼間に似ず。されば常には夜更けては蕎麦売る人の風鈴か、群れている犬の鳴き声より他にはたえて物音もない町家はずれの賑わいで、昼より明るい提灯に火の用心を呼ぶ声と拍子木の音がうるさく、市中はかえって静寂として人はあるとも思えない有様。
実に前代未聞にて後の話の種なりけり。

The earthquake commotion still hasn't settled our nerves, so we'd like to have a drink. What? We can't be patient, so let's not put it in that teapot. What? We can't see the sake flask either.
Oh well, let's have it cold. "No sake flask in the field camp teapot" - this is exactly what that means.

On the night of the second day of the tenth month of Ansei 2 (Year of the Rabbit), at the fourth hour, the earth shook greatly, mountains collapsed, rivers were buried, houses were crushed, buildings toppled, boats rowing along the shore drifted in the waves, and travelers on the road didn't know where to set their feet. Moreover, fierce fires broke out from all directions, with countless injured and dead, and frequent aftershocks continued to come, so people trembled in fear.
Even normally locked and secured houses and storehouses were abandoned in darkness, with some carrying wicker baskets like Goroemon, others like Shimaya's clerk carrying pots, housewives with their mats, and servant girls like Osan carrying their cosmetic boxes - whenever crows cawed ominously they would run out, and when things seemed better they would flee again, spreading doors and laying out tatami mats in squares and vacant lots here and there. Under the shade of trees, instead of flowers, they made lodgings with stars as their host.
Without even thatched roofs and with bamboo pillars lacking elegance, makeshift folding screens were erected to create something resembling bedchambers, but whenever the metal fittings of chests rattled, people would cry "What's that!" and be startled - quite unlike newlyweds during the day. Thus, while normally after nightfall there would be nothing but the wind chimes of soba sellers or the barking of stray dogs in the quiet outskirts of town, now there was commotion, with lanterns brighter than daylight, voices calling for fire prevention, and the clattering of wooden clappers so noisy that the city center was conversely so quiet it seemed devoid of people.
Truly unprecedented, this will surely become material for future stories.
