思ひしめて今は何事もうき世はいらさる事

ちなくこゑありそれをきゝては山の
おくにも世のうき事は有けり
とかくこのよの中よのが
れゆくべきみちこそ

皇太后宮大夫 俊成
世の中よ
道こそなけれ
思ひ入る
山の奥にも
鹿ぞ鳴くなる

八十二番
この歌の心は、いろいろな世の辛い事柄を心に思い込んで、今はもう何事も辛い世は必要のないことと思い定めて、深い山の奥にでもと心に決めたなら、また山の奥にも鹿が物悲しく鳴く声があり、それを聞いては山の奥にも世の辛い事はあるのだなあ。とかくこの世の中から逃れ去るべき道こそないのだと嘆く心である。

Number Eighty-Two
The heart of this poem is that having taken to heart all the various sorrows of this world, thinking now that all the painful things of this bitter world are unnecessary, if one resolves to go even to the depths of deep mountains, there too the deer cry with melancholy voices. Hearing this, one realizes that even in the mountain depths there are sorrows of the world. In any case, there is no path by which to escape from this world - such is the lamenting heart.
