本多横山西国老への利常卿親翰写如＿レ左
今廿日御城へ我等筑前守被為召内々訴訟之通
御前相済候我等歳茂未已かく不遜儀候得共
台徳院様以来連々訴訟申上候其上此頃者病者
罷成候間被仰出御延引被成候はゝ気を懸て茂可存被
思召養生のため旁如此任申上候旨御直之上意
忝仕合難有御事に候筑前守知行八拾万石淡路守
十万石飛騨守七万石残所隠居分に被仰付我等
筑前守可致在江戸之由是又被仰付候故肥前守殿
隠居分十九万石之内十七万石淡路守飛騨守江
被下我等儀故肥前守殿御隠居国に被為置候
はゝ知行分無構可有罷在候替々在江戸仕候様に被思
召候間隠居分知行高可被下哉及申上候処に右之通
被仰渡候家中人持面々物頭中江此段可被

現代語訳
一、寛永十六年六月二十日、利常卿が隠居し、加越能三か国のうち八十万石を世子（光高）へ譲り、十万石を次子利次君へ、七万石を三男利治君へ分与された。加賀能美郡、越中新川郡のうち二十二万二千七百六十石を養老領とし、小松に在城して隠居生活を送った。
本多横山西国老への利常卿親筆の書状の写しは以下の通りである。
「今日二十日、御城へ私ども筑前守（光高）が召され、内々訴訟の通り御前で相済みました。私どもは歳も未だ若く、このような不遜な儀ではございますが、台徳院様（二代将軍秀忠）以来、連々訴訟申し上げており、その上この頃は病気になっておりますので、仰せ出され御延引なされるならば、気を遣って存じ上げられると思召し、養生のため、何かとこのように任せ申し上げる旨、御直々の上意を
ありがたく仕合わせ難有い御事でございます。筑前守知行八十万石、淡路守（利次）十万石、飛騨守（利治）七万石、残りの所を隠居分に仰せ付けられ、私ども筑前守は江戸在住致すべき由、これまた仰せ付けられました。故に肥前守殿（利常）隠居分十九万石のうち十七万石を淡路守・飛騨守江下され、私どもの儀は故肥前守殿の御隠居国に置かれるならば、知行分に構わず罷り在ることができますが、代々江戸在住仕るように思召されておりますので、隠居分知行高を下されるかと申し上げたところ、右の通り仰せ渡されました。家中人持面々、物頭中へこの段を申し聞かせるべきです。謹言

1. On the 20th day of the 6th month of Kan'ei 16 (1639), Lord Toshitsune retired and transferred 800,000 koku from the three provinces of Kaga, Etchu, and Noto to his heir (Mitsutaka), 100,000 koku to his second son Lord Tositsugu, and 70,000 koku to his third son Lord Tosiharu. He made 222,760 koku from Nomi District in Kaga and Niikawa District in Etchu his retirement domain and resided in Komatsu Castle.
A copy of Lord Toshitsune's personal letter to Karō Honda Yokoyama Nishi is as follows:
"Today on the 20th, Chikuzen-no-kami (Mitsutaka) was summoned to the castle, and the private petition was settled before His Lordship. Although I am still young in years and this is presumptuous of me, I have been continuously petitioning since the time of Taitoku-in-sama (the second shogun Hidetada). Moreover, as I have recently fallen ill, if you would graciously grant a postponement, I thought you might be concerned, so for the sake of my health, I have respectfully submitted this request as a direct appeal to Your Lordship.
I am most grateful and honored by this matter. Chikuzen-no-kami has been granted a fief of 800,000 koku, Awaji-no-kami (Tositsugu) 100,000 koku, Hida-no-kami (Tosiharu) 70,000 koku, with the remainder appointed as my retirement portion. I, Chikuzen-no-kami, have also been ordered to reside in Edo. Therefore, of the 190,000 koku that was Hizen-no-kami-dono's (Toshitsune's) retirement portion, 170,000 koku has been granted to Awaji-no-kami and Hida-no-kami. As for myself, if I were to remain in the former Hizen-no-kami-dono's retirement domain, I could reside there regardless of fief income, but since it is intended that generations serve in Edo residence, when I inquired whether retirement fief income would be granted, the above was decreed. This matter should be communicated to the retainers and unit commanders. Respectfully,
