哥の心は人とみつつうした
りしがろけんしてしのびあふ
こともならずなりし時よめる哥也
あふことはさておき一トことのものいひ
かはすこともかなはねば今は只こがれゐるばか
りにてひたすらに思ひせまり気も心
もたえなんとすかほど【斯程＝これほど】のありさま
をせめて人だよりでなくおもふ人に
一ト目あふてわが口づからぢき〳〵につげ

六十三番
歌の心は、人と密かに愛し合っていたが、露見してしまい、忍んで逢うこともできなくなった時に詠んだ歌である。
逢うことはさておき、ひと言の言葉を交わすこともできないので、今はただ恋い焦がれているだけで、ひたすらに思いが募り、気も心も絶えてしまいそうなほどの有様である。せめて人づてでなく、思う人に一目逢って、自分の口から直接に告げ知らせる方法があればよいのにと詠んだ歌である。あはれ深い歌である。

The heart of this poem: This was composed when the poet was secretly in love with someone, but their relationship was discovered, and they could no longer meet in secret.
Since meeting is out of the question, and they cannot even exchange a single word, now they can only yearn with longing. Their feelings grow ever more intense, and their spirit and heart seem ready to expire. They wish there were some way to meet their beloved just once, not through an intermediary, and tell them directly with their own voice. This is a deeply moving poem.
