【Right folio】 A variety Omine Shakunage (Rhododendron) The shape of the leaves resembles that of yatake (arrow bamboo), thick, with a deep green upper surface and yellowish-brown hairs on the underside. The flowers are said to be the same as described in the preceding entry. As the plant has not been observed here firsthand, no illustration is provided. 【Left folio】 Bokei (牡荊, *Vitex negundo*) Ninjinboku Tatsunokimi Mitsubafuji Doran (土虊)《Marginal note: Tsūga》 Mokuran (木虊)《Marginal note: Mukeihidan》 There was no Japanese-native variety, but since Chinese seeds were introduced during the Kyōhō era (1716–1736), the plant has become widespread in the present day. The trees grow in dense thickets, reaching heights of over one jō (approximately 300 cm or more). In spring, new leaves emerge; the branches and leaves grow in opposite pairs. The shape of the leaves begins as three leaflets per stem, later becoming five, resembling those of ginseng (*Panax ginseng*)—hence the name "Ninjinboku" (Ginseng Tree). Each individual leaflet is long and pointed with serrated edges, resembling the leaves of kōju (香薷, *Elsholtzia ciliata*). Young leaves are tinged slightly purple, becoming pale green as they grow. New branches are square in cross-section and green in color; old branches are round and brownish. When broken, the interior reveals a square pith, distinguishing it from other trees. From early summer onward, spikes emerge from the tips of each branch, forming flowers. The branches are numerous, and the length is again approximately [a certain measure]. The shape of the flowers resembles those of shiso (perilla, *Perilla frutescens*) and is pale purple. Fruit is subsequently produced; it resembles the seeds of koendoro (胡荽, coriander, *Coriandrum sativum*) in shape, round and slightly elongated. When ripe, it turns black.
