山中に生じる。枝葉は対生し、葉の形はニシキギ（桃葉衛矛）に似て淡緑色で、細かい鋸歯がある。葉の間に五弁の小さな紫色の花を群がり咲かせる。後に丸い実を結ぶ。初めは緑色で、秋以降に熟して紫色となる。形はナツハゼ（南燭）の実のようである。葉が枯れ落ちると、実はいっそう美しくなる。

It grows in the mountains. The branches and leaves are arranged in opposite pairs. The shape of the leaves resembles that of *Nishikigi* (桃葉衛矛, *Euonymus alatus*), being pale green with fine serrations along the edges. Between the leaves, small five-petaled purple flowers bloom in dense clusters. Afterward, round berries are produced. Initially green, they ripen to a purple color after autumn. Their shape resembles the berries of *Natsuhaze* (南燭, *Vaccinium oldhami* / Japanese blueberry). When the leaves have fallen and withered, the berries become all the more beautiful.
