**Right folio:** One variety *Hontenguwa* *Otanguwa* (Owari dialect name) *Shōkinka* [Japanese name] *Funboku* [local name in Ōshima] *Hoommaruha* [Dutch name] I have not yet seen any specimen produced domestically in Japan. It comes from the Ryūkyū Islands, and is also said to be found on Hachijōjima. Being a product of warm regions, it is sensitive to cold. Unless it is kept in a heated greenhouse (*muro*) during the winter months, it will invariably wither and die. The tree resembles the *mukuge* (rose of Sharon, *Hibiscus syriacus*) and grows to a height of about three to four *shaku*, being slender and soft. The leaves are small, resembling those of the grapevine or paper mulberry (*kaji*), and their surfaces bear pale green variegated markings. In autumn, single flowers bloom one at a time from between the leaves. The buds are small and resemble those of *mukuge*; when open, the flowers have five petals of pale pinkish-red, measuring about four *bu* across, and are thick in texture, resembling peach blossoms. After flowering, it sets fruit. Four seeds are joined together in a cluster, each about the size of a hemp seed, and they are covered with fine hairs. **Left folio: No text**
