伊豆国の海岸に自生している。樹木は木槿（むくげ）に似ており、高さは三、四尺ほど。葉は蔓荊（はまはい）の葉に似て大きく、厚く、黄緑色で、互生する。夏に葉の間から花を開く。形は木槿に似て小さく、花弁は厚く、基部に濃紅色を帯びている。

It grows wild along the coastline of Izu Province. The tree resembles *mukuge* (rose of Sharon, *Hibiscus syriacus*) and reaches a height of about three to four *shaku*. The leaves are large and thick, similar to those of *hamahai* (*Vitex rotundifolia*, the beach vitex), yellowish-green in color, and arranged alternately. In summer, flowers open from between the leaves. The form resembles that of *mukuge* but is smaller; the petals are thick and suffused with deep crimson at their base.
