**[Right folio]** **One variety** ***Kuroumemonoki*** (Kyoto) The leaves of this variety are considerably smaller than those of the preceding entry. In spring, small pale-yellow flowers bloom in clusters at the base of the new leaves. Afterward, berries are produced. The berries are smaller in form than those of the preceding entry, and upon ripening they turn an indigo-black color. --- **[Left folio]** **Jotei (女貞)** — *nezumimochi* [from *Wamyōshō*]; *miyatsukogi* [from *Honzō Wamyō*]; *tatsunoki* [same source] Regional/common names: *yabutsubaki*; *teratsubaki* (Banshū / Harima Province); *fuyunari*; *itashi* (Matsumae) Chinese/literary names: *Suitōsei* (水冬青) [from *Butsuri Shōshiki* / *Wuli Xiaoshi*]; *Tōsei* (冬生) [from *Honzō Wamyō*, citing *Shakuyakusei* / *Shi Yaoxing*]; *Tōseiju* (凍青樹) [from *Kyūkō Honzō* / *Jiuhuang Bencao*] The tree grows to a height of over one *jō* (approximately 300 cm or more), with branches and stems growing in profusion. The leaves do not wither in winter. In form they resemble those of the Chinese privet (*tōsei* / *Ligustrum lucidum*), tapering to a point at both ends; the branches and leaves grow in opposite pairs (*taisei*). In summer, panicles form at the tips of the branches, and small white flowers bloom in dense clusters. Afterward, berries are produced. The berries are round with a slightly elongated shape, resembling mouse droppings in form. Upon ripening, they turn a deep purple-black color.
