While staying in that area together with my colleague Takasaki Heihachi for official duties involving inspection and preparation of national public works, around 4 o'clock in the night of the 24th of last month, there was a great earthquake beyond anything we had ever heard of. The aforementioned Shiozaki Village, a village district with a assessed rice yield of over 2,900 koku and reportedly having over 600 houses in total, suffered collapsed houses including main houses, storehouses, storage buildings, detached houses and others. When counted by building units, there were 4-500 collapsed structures, and along the walking paths, roughly 6-7 streets worth of collapsed houses, as the local headman's officials roughly investigated and reported to us. Regarding casualties, they reported that among the many people, approximately 60 died instantly, but even by the time we departed from that place, there were additional dead bodies being dug out from the collapsed houses. Naturally, regarding travelers, it was difficult to quickly

determine the numbers. As for our own lodging, it was also destroyed by the earthquake, and while we barely managed to save our lives, our luggage and other belongings were trapped under the house and had to be dug out when dawn broke the next morning. Regarding Shiozaki Village, there were also some fires, but only 2-3 houses were lost to burning. During the great earthquake, fires broke out simultaneously in all directions far and near, dust clouds rose everywhere, mountain rumbling and shaking occurred dozens of times throughout the night, there were tremendous human voices, and the sound of rockfalls was intense. Fields and roads alike split open both vertically and horizontally from 2-3 shaku to 4-5 sun in width, water gushed out, and mud and soil erupted, making it seem as if the world was coming to an end. The places where the ground split had step-like differences of about 2 shaku, and the garden areas where mud erupted had an odor
