此心はおほけなくはおよびなくをいふ心也
わがたつそまとはひえの山のこと也この山
にすみて世の中のたみをば一子のごとく
あはれみ袖をおほふべきほつけ【法華？】のぎやう
じやなれどもおよびなきわがことく
のものはたゞいたづらにこの山のある
じとなりてすむばかりなり
とひたすらにおのれを
かへりみてよみ
たるうたなり
現代語訳
前大僧正慈円
おこがましくもなく
この憂き世の
民に
覆いかけるかな
我が立つ
杣に墨染めの袖
九十五番
この歌の心は「おこがましくもなく」は「身の程知らずでもなく」という意味である。「わが立つ杣」とは比叡山のことである。この山に住んで、世の中の人々を我が子のように慈しみ、袖で覆い守ってあげたいという法華経の修行者であるけれども、身の程知らずな私のような者は、ただ無為にこの山の住人となって住んでいるだけである。
とひたすら自分を省みて詠んだ歌である。

Not presumptuously,
I spread over
the people of this troubled world
my ink-dyed sleeves
from the mountain forest
where I dwell

The meaning of this poem: "Not presumptuously" means "not beyond my station." "The mountain forest where I dwell" refers to Mount Hiei. Living on this mountain, I would like to care for all the people of the world like my own children and shelter them with my sleeves, as a practitioner of the Lotus Sutra should. However, someone inadequate like myself can only dwell here as a mere resident of this mountain.
