先哲（センテツ）言（イ）へることあり学校（ガクカウ）の教（ヲシヘ）高上（カウシヤウ）に
して乏（トボ）しからむより寧（ムシ）ろ低（ヒキ）くして
普（アマ）ねからむを貴（タフトシ）とす茲（コノ）年（トシ）初秋（シヨシウ）
官（カミ）より命（オホセゴト）ありて 都鄙（トヒ）市郡（シグン）に学校（ガクカウ）庠（シヤウ）【左側ルビ：モノマナビ】

序文
先哲が言ったことがある。学校の教えは高尚で
不足するよりも、むしろ低くても
広く行き渡ることを尊ぶべきである、と。この年の初秋、
官から命令があって、都市部や地方の郡部に学校や
学び舎の設立が始まったのは、庶民の幼い子どもたちを
導いてくださる、まことに文明開化の恩恵であり、優れた政治の恵みである。

Preface
The ancient sages once said: Rather than having school education be lofty but insufficient, it is better that it be humble but widely accessible. In the early autumn of this year, by imperial command, the establishment of schools and academies began in both urban and rural districts. This guidance of the children of common people is truly a blessing of civilization and enlightenment, and the benevolent influence of good governance.
