現代語訳
昔々、ずっと昔のことであったが、
ある田舎の片隅に森村という
場所があった。その
森村の山奥に
大きな寺だが大変荒れ
果てた古い寺があった
が、今は
化け物の住み処
となって
どのような僧侶を
送り込んでも一夜すら
過ごせず、だんだんと
化け物が
はびこり
土地の衰退になる
ことを嘆き、何とか
正体を見極めて
良い僧侶を
送り込み寺を
再建すれば
土地も繁栄
するだろうと
いろいろと
相談する
♪望みならば
ともかくも
偉い僧侶が
体裁良い名僧
でなくては
何度でも
（失敗する）だろう
♪庄屋殿
との
相談で
「常雲という
坊主が
行くだろうか、
申し上げますが
どうしましょうか」

Long, long ago, in times long past,
there was a place called Mori Village
in a remote countryside area.
In the mountains behind
Mori Village, there was
a large temple, but greatly
deteriorated and ancient,
which had now become
a dwelling place
for monsters.
No matter what monks
were sent there, none could
spend even one night, and gradually
the monsters
multiplied.
Lamenting that this would lead
to the decline of the land,
the villagers wondered how
they might identify the true nature
of these creatures and send
a good monk to
rebuild the temple,
which would bring
prosperity to
the area, and so
they consulted together.
♪If it is our wish,
in any case,
a great monk,
a prestigious and renowned
monk is needed,
or else no matter
how many times (we try)...
♪The village headman
and others
consulted:
"Should the monk
named Jōun
go there?
We respectfully ask,
what shall we do?"
