From around 6 o'clock in the evening on June 15th of this year, a tsunami raged for over a hundred ri, beginning from the Ōshū coast and extending to the distant Ezo land of Hokkaido. When I inquired in detail about this, I learned that it was the 5th day of the 5th month in the old calendar, so from Ryōishi town to the countryside, people were taking their seasonal festival holiday. From around noon, black clouds arose, and sea roaring and earthquakes continued incessantly. While people were wondering at this strange phenomenon, a thunderous earthquake struck like cannons firing all at once. In that terrifying instant, a tsunami over ten jō high surged and crashed down all at once, and along forty-four or forty-five ri of coastline, mountains collapsed and houses and people were swept into the sea. The force of it was such that along the coast of Shika in Iwate Prefecture, in seven towns and twenty-nine villages, over six thousand houses were swept away and thirty-seven thousand people died. In Kesen District's fifteen villages, seventeen hundred houses were also swept away and over six thousand three hundred people died. Also in the southern Hei District, in two towns and twelve villages, one thousand six hundred sixty-three houses were destroyed and over six thousand eight hundred people died. Continuing to the east...
