閉伊郡では町が3か所、19か村で2,783戸が被害を受け、死者は1万3千人余り。九戸郡は町家が2か所、その他5か村で、死者数は約360人余り。続く青森県下においては1,000戸以上の流失家屋があり、まだ死者の調査は完了していない。また、砂地に打ち上げられた遺体は数知れず、あちこちに積み上げて置いてある。絶え間ない火葬の煙が消えていく様子は後を知らず、白波の響く音さえも物恐ろしく、本当になんとも哀れな有様である。

ここに一つの不思議な話がある。九戸郡の海岸にある宮戸村という小さな村でのことである。ここに漁師の仁助という者がおり、妻子4人の貧しい暮らしをしていたが、いつも正直者で、妻と共に一人の母に孝行を尽くしていた。その孝行ぶりがお上に聞こえ、県庁から御褒美をもらい、なお立派に世渡りをしていた。今年、息子は9歳になるが、その日仁助は漁に出て海で釣りをしていた。

In the following Aomori Prefecture, over 1,000 houses were swept away, and the investigation of casualties has not yet been completed. Moreover, countless bodies were washed up on the sandy shores and piled up here and there. The endless smoke from cremations disappearing into the unknown, and even the sound of white waves crashing was terrifyingly ominous - truly a pitiable sight.

Here is one miraculous story. In a small village called Miyato in the coastal area of Kunohe County, there lived a fisherman named Nisuke. Though he lived in poverty with his wife and four children, he was always an honest man who, together with his wife, devoted himself to caring for his elderly mother. His filial piety became known to the authorities, and he received a reward from the prefectural office, continuing to live his life admirably. This year his son turned nine, and on that day Nisuke had gone out fishing at sea.
