この歌の心は、万法一如に帰するということを述べているのである。行く者も帰る者も、知っている者も知らない者も、しばらく別れてさまざまな生死の関所を出ることはない。しかしながら、法性の都（浄土）へ到達するには、この関所を通らなければ会い難いと、世の中を感慨深く思ってこの歌を詠んだのである。この人を盲目であると思うのは間違いである。

Hyakunin Isshu Picture Commentary
The heart of this poem expresses the principle that all phenomena return to the same fundamental truth. Those who go and those who return, those who know and those who don't know, temporarily part but cannot escape the various barriers of life and death. However, to reach the capital of ultimate reality (the Pure Land), one must pass through this barrier, or it would be difficult to meet. He composed this poem with deep feeling about the world. It is mistaken to think this person was merely blind.
