現代語訳
元久の頃、鎌倉の三味線堀に桑田万蔵という者がいた。天々と呼ばれていた男である。この頃、鎌倉の風俗は大いに奢りが進み、武士も町人も行儀が乱れ、大磯化粧坂の他に岡場所と号して遊女町が数多くあった。この他にも素人で転び芸者などと呼ばれる美しい女性が町々に溢れていたので、好色な初心者は言うに及ばず、隠居の身となって去年還暦を迎えてから浮気になり、芸者を囲うやら酒を呑むやら遊興しない家は稀であった。元来天々も三味線屋の息子で身を持ち崩したが、俳諧のことは知らないものの、適当につけた「おはい々」の俳号から思いつきで俳諧師となり、宗匠というのは仮の名で、本名は太鼓持ちで、そうやって世渡りをしていたのは実に風雅なことであった。

Around the Genkyu era (1204-1206), there was a man named Kuwata Manzo in Shamisen-bori, Kamakura. He was called Ten-ten. During this time, the customs of Kamakura had become greatly extravagant, and both samurai and townspeople had become ill-mannered. Besides Oiso Keshozaka, there were numerous pleasure quarters called okaba-sho (unlicensed prostitution areas) with many courtesan districts. In addition, beautiful women called korobigeisha (fallen geisha) who were originally amateurs could be found throughout the towns. Not only were novice pleasure-seekers abundant, but even retired men who had reached their 60th birthday (kanreki) the previous year had become dissolute, keeping geisha, drinking, and engaging in pleasure-seeking—houses that didn't indulge in such activities were rare. Originally, Ten-ten was also the son of a shamisen shop owner who had squandered his fortune, and though he knew nothing about haikai poetry, he became a haikai master on a whim based on his hastily chosen pen name "Ohai-hai," calling himself a master poet as a false name—his real occupation was that of a professional entertainer (taikomochi), and it was quite refined how he made his living this way.
