現代語訳
ご存知の越後の国の大入道は、一子を「一つ目小僧」と呼んで寵愛していた。この小僧は親に劣らぬ化け物で強者であったので、多くの化け物たちが入道に言うには、「一つ目殿は今は立派な化け物ぶりなので、入道は隠居して世を一つ目にお譲りください」と勧めた。そこで入道も仲間の勧めにより、自分の一つ目をくり抜いて小僧に譲り、我が身は「目一つ坊」と名を改めて、世を逃れて暮らしていた。
【越後の入道の台詞】
小僧に世は渡したが、味を見ればよいのだが、昔と違って今は化け物も大部分が食いにくい。
英語訳
As you know, the great priest (nyūdō) of Echigo Province dearly loved his only son, whom he called "One-eyed Boy." This boy was a monster and warrior no less formidable than his father, so many monsters said to the priest: "Young One-eye has now become such a splendid monster that the priest should retire and pass the world over to One-eye." Following his companions' advice, the priest gouged out his own eye and gave it to the boy, renamed himself "One-eye Monk," and lived in retirement from the world.
