此心はあしびきとは山といはんまくら
ことばなりなが〳〵しといはんとてした
りをのといへりしだりをとは山どりの
尾はなが〳〵したるものなればかぎり
なく長き夜をいはんとてなり秋の

さへうかるべきにひとりはえねられ

【本文】
この歌の意味は、「あしびき」というのは山にかかる枕詞である。「ながながし」と言おうとして「しだりを」と言っている。「しだりを」とは山鳥の尾が長々と垂れ下がっているものなので、限りなく長い夜を表現しようとしているのである。秋の夜の長さに加えて、二人で寝ていても辛いのに、一人では到底眠ることができないという意味である。

【Main Text】
The meaning of this poem is that "ashibiki" is a makurakotoba (pillow word) that modifies "mountain." The word "shidario" is used to express "naganagashi" (long and drawn out). "Shidario" refers to the long, drooping tail of a mountain pheasant, and is used to express an endlessly long night. The meaning is that autumn nights are long and drawn out, and while it would be painful even sleeping with someone, sleeping alone makes it impossible to fall asleep at all.
