恵比寿天（ゑびすてん）申訳之記（もふしわけのき）
我等諸神に留守居をあづかりの居候ところ
あまりよきたいをつりしゆへ一 盃（はい）をすごし
たいすい《割書：ニ》および候あいだをつけこみたちまち
かなめいしをはねかへし大江戸へまかりいで
蔵（くら）のこしまきをうちくづしはちまきを
はづし諸家（しよけ）をつぶし死亡（しぼう）人すくなからず
出火（しゆつくわ）いたさせはなはだぼうじやくふじんの
しよぎやういたし候ゆへさつそくとりおさへ
ぎんみ仕候ところ一とうのなまづは身ぶるひして
大《割書：ニ》おそれ一言（いちごん）のこたへもなくこのときかしらだち
たるとみゆるものつゝしんで申□よふ
〽おそれながら仰のおもむきかしこまり候也此たび大へんの
ことは一とふり御きゝ遊され下さるべし此義は申上ずとも御存【注①】の
義にしてはるなつあきふゆのうちにあついじふんにさむい日あり
さむいときにあたゝかなる日ありかくのごとくきこうのくるひ
有てかんだんの順なるとしは少く候今年最ふじゆんなから
ごゝくのよくみのり候は八百万神の御守り遊され候
御力による所也さて天地にかんだんの順のさだまり
ありてはるなつと其きのじかうことの外くるひ候ゆへ
わたくしともくにのすまひにては以の外おもしろき
じせつになりたりとわきまへなきものどもち【「ら」ヵ 注②】ん
しんのごとくくるひまはり候ゆへわたくしども
いろ〳〵せいとうをいたせどもみゝにもかけず
らんぼうにくるひさはぎ候よりつひに思ひよら
ざる日本へひゞき御しはいの内なる

これなく候也され共わけて

のこりなく御うりつくし候とも

恵比寿天神申し訳の記
私たち（恵比寿・天神）が諸神の留守番を預かっているところ、あまりに良い鯛を釣ったので一杯が過ぎて、大いに酔っぱらってしまった隙をつけ込まれ、たちまち要石を跳ね返して大江戸へ出かけ、蔵の腰巻を打ち崩し、鉢巻を外し、諸家を潰し、死亡者も少なくなく、出火もさせ、はなはだ暴虐不仁の所業をいたしましたので、さっそく取り押さえて吟味いたしましたところ、一匹のナマズは身震いして大いに恐れ、一言の答えもありません。この時、頭立ったと見えるものが慎んで申しますよう：
「恐れながら仰せの趣、かしこまって承りました。この度の大変なことは、一通りお聞き遊ばされてください。この件は申し上げずとも御存知のことですが、春夏秋冬のうちに暑い時分に寒い日があり、寒い時に暖かな日があり、このように気候が狂って寒暖の順序が正常な年は少なくございます。今年も最も不順でありながら、五穀がよく実りましたのは、八百万神のお守り遊ばされる御力によるところです。さて天地に寒暖の順序の定まりがあって、春夏とその気の時候が格別に狂っておりますので、私どもは国の住まいでは格別面白い時節になったと、わきまえのない者どもが狂人のごとく狂い回っておりますので、私どもがいろいろと制止をいたしましても耳にもかけず、乱暴に狂い騒いでおりますより、ついに思いもよらない日本へ響き、御支配の内なるところを損じました段、いかなる罪に行われるとも言い訳これなくございます。されども特に御願いには、私どもを残らず御売りつくしになられても、損じた家蔵の足しにもなりませんので、まずしばらくの命を御預け下され、これより日本の土地を守り、いかなる時候違いでも、この度のようなことは決していたしません。天下太平、御国豊年を、君が代をお守り申し上げます」
と一同に願いましたので、私より御詫び申し上げましたところ、さっそくお聞き済み下され、まことにもってありがたく存じます。
今年十月の厄のため、よって苦難のこと：

【Title】
Record of Ebisu and Tenjin's Apology
While we (Ebisu and Tenjin) were entrusted with watching over the affairs of the various gods, we caught such fine sea bream that we drank too much and became heavily intoxicated. Taking advantage of this opening, the catfish immediately knocked away the keystone and went out to great Edo, destroying the foundations of storehouses, removing their protective bands, crushing various houses, causing not a few deaths, and causing fires—committing extremely violent and inhumane acts. Therefore, we immediately apprehended them for interrogation. One catfish trembled with great fear and could not utter a single word in response. At this time, what appeared to be their leader respectfully spoke as follows:
"With all due respect, we humbly acknowledge your words. Please hear the full account of this great disaster. Though we need not mention what you already know, among the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, there are cold days during hot periods and warm days during cold times. With such climate disruptions, years with proper seasonal order are few. Though this year has been most irregular, the five grains have ripened well thanks to the protective power of the eight million gods. However, with the established order of hot and cold in heaven and earth, and spring and summer weather being particularly disordered, we ignorant ones in our earthly dwellings thought this an exceptionally interesting season and went about wildly like madmen. Though we tried various means to restrain them, they paid no heed and continued their violent revelry, until unexpectedly the effects reached Japan, damaging areas under your governance. Whatever punishment we may receive, we have no excuse. However, we particularly request that even if you were to sell us all completely, it would not help restore the damaged houses and storehouses. Please spare our lives for now, and from here forward we will protect Japan's land. No matter what weather irregularities occur, we will never again commit acts like those of this time. We will protect the realm's peace, the country's abundant harvests, and His Majesty's reign."
Since they all made this plea, I offered our apology, and you graciously heard and accepted it immediately, for which we are truly grateful.
