当郡は当国の南海中に出て大なる島のことし和名抄延喜式等に智
多とかき日本後紀にも延暦廿四年七月丙子尾張国智多郡￣ノ地十三
町賜＿二 中納言従三位藤原朝臣内麿【一点脱】と見え万葉集以下の古書に知多
とかける例もまゝ見えて今も智多知多と交へ用ひて一定しがたし当郡尾
のごとく張出たるより尾張と名付初しといへる説は既に初巻国号濫觴
の条下にいへり西南は伊勢志摩東は三河の海に接す郡中凡そ一百
四十余村東を東浦西を西浦といふ産物尤多く山海秀美にして風景他
郡に勝れり就＿レ 中南の方大井師崎より小野浦 柿並（かきなみ）までの際（あひだ）は断巌（だんがん）畳々（じやう〳〵）

知多郡
当郡は当国の南海中に突き出た大きな島のようである。『和名抄』『延喜式』等には「智多」と書かれ、『日本後紀』にも延暦二十四年七月丙子の条に「尾張国智多郡の地十三町を中納言従三位藤原朝臣内麿に賜う」と見える。『万葉集』以下の古書には「知多」と書かれた例もしばしば見られ、今でも「智多」「知多」と交互に用いられて一定していない。当郡が尾のように張り出ているところから「尾張」と名付けられたという説は、すでに初巻の「国号濫觴」の条で述べた。西南は伊勢・志摩、東は三河の海に接している。郡中はおよそ一百四十余村あり、東を東浦、西を西浦という。産物が非常に多く、山海の景色が美しくて風景は他郡に勝っている。なかでも南の方、大井・師崎から小野浦・柿並までの間は、断崖が幾重にも重なって、激しい波が常に雪のように白く砕けている。また篠島・日間賀島その他の小島が広大な海上に浮かんでいるのがすべて眼前に並んで、比類なき眺望である。すべて文人・墨客がこの浦に遊歴する者は四季を通じて絶えることがない。

Chita District
This district extends into the southern sea of our province like a large island. In the "Wamyōshō" and "Engi-shiki" it is written as "Chita" (智多), and in the "Nihon Kōki" we see the entry for the twenty-fourth year of Enryaku, seventh month, hinoe-ne day: "Thirteen chō of land in Chita District, Owari Province, were granted to Middle Counselor Junior Third Rank Fujiwara no Asomi Uchimaro." In the "Man'yōshū" and other ancient books, examples of it being written as "Chita" (知多) are also frequently seen, and even today both "Chita" (智多) and "Chita" (知多) are used interchangeably without consistency. The theory that "Owari" was named because this district extends out like a tail (o) has already been discussed in the first volume under the section "Origins of the Provincial Name." To the southwest it borders the seas of Ise and Shima, and to the east the sea of Mikawa. The district contains approximately 140 villages, with the east called Higashi-ura and the west called Nishi-ura. It is extremely rich in products, and with its beautiful mountains and seas, its scenery surpasses that of other districts. Particularly in the southern area, from Ōi and Morosaki to Ono-ura and Kakinami, precipitous cliffs rise in layers, and raging waves constantly crash white like snow. Also, Shino Island, Himaka Island, and other small islands floating on the vast ocean all appear before one's eyes in an incomparable vista. Literary men and artists who visit this bay continue throughout the four seasons without interruption.

At Ayuchi Bay the tide has ebbed, it seems—even the boats rowing out in morning from Chita Bay are seen drawing toward the offing.
