知る者である。正玄はその一人である。しかし源君（主君）の推挙がなければ、正玄の志は実行することができなかっただろう。惜しいことに、嗣君（跡継ぎの君主）の悩みは甚だしく、そこで朋友（加藤朋友）は源君に語った。君は言われた「正玄は職分において私心がない。私は深くそれを知っている。その声価（評判）がこれほどまでに至るとは意外であった」と。稲葉美濃大守もこれを歎き惜しむこと、酒井侯と同じである。世に名誉を知られた者はこのようであった。正玄には子がなく、これに先立って君は継嗣を立てるよう命じたが、辞して言った「臣は功績もなく厚禄を食んでおり、またそれを伝えることは臣の志ではありません」と。君はこれを理解し、その言葉に従った。

are those who know [such matters]. Seigens (Masanaga) was one of them. However, without the recommendation of Lord Genji (his lord), Seigen's aspirations could not have been realized. Regrettably, the troubles of the heir lord were severe, so Hoyu (Kato Hoyu) spoke to Lord Genji. The lord said, "Seigen has no personal motives in his official duties. I know this well. I did not expect his reputation to reach such heights." Lord Inaba Mino no Kami also lamented and regretted this, the same as Lord Sakai. Those who gained honor and recognition in the world were like this. Seigen had no son, and prior to this, the lord had commanded him to establish an heir, but he declined, saying, "I, your retainer, have no achievements yet receive generous stipend, and to pass this on would not be in accordance with my will." The lord understood this and followed his words.
