【狐は人の眉毛を数えて化かすと言われていて、狐に化かされたくない時は眉毛につばをつけて濡らし、毛がくっついて数えられないようにする。】
現代語訳
お坊さん（所化）が檀家から法事料として一分を預かったが、着服してしまい、法事をせずに済ませる。そんな悪だくみなどないと馬鹿にされるが、そこは仏壇でお焼香の匂いがする。
その日本人の不信心から怒りが生じて、二百文で蒲焼きに酒五合を買い、願いの裏付け草履を四百文で買った。これで二朱は使い切ったが、一分の楽しみなのだから、男色遊びなどもあるだろうと思って、吉原の芳町を一、二度歩き回った。しかし一分の金で化かされては腹を立て、眉毛を濡らすと、狐は離れてしまい、元の二朱に握りしめている。
やはりこれを盗んでいるので、都合一分の得をしているのである。

英語訳
A young Buddhist monk (oshoke) received one bu from a parishioner for memorial service fees, but embezzled it and conducted no service. Though people might scoff that there's no such trickery, the place indeed smells of incense from the Buddhist altar.
From this Japanese person's impiety, anger arose, and with 200 mon he bought grilled eel and five gō of sake, and bought wish-fulfilling backing sandals for 400 mon. This exhausted two shu, but since it was the pleasure of one bu, he thought there might also be male prostitution and such, so he walked around Yoshichō in the pleasure quarters once or twice. However, being tricked by one bu's worth of money made him angry, and when he wet his eyebrows, the fox departed, and he was left clutching the original two shu.
Indeed, since he is stealing this, he profits a total of one bu.
[It was believed that foxes count human eyebrows to bewitch people, and when one doesn't want to be tricked by a fox, they wet their eyebrows with saliva so the hairs stick together and cannot be counted.]
