現代語訳
「怪力乱神は立派な男が語るものではない」とはいうものの、みっともない恐ろしい目に遭ったことがございませんと言って、ある侍が百文を持って騙されにやって来る。
今か今かと待ち構えていると、どこからともなく太鼓の音が聞こえてくる。「さてこそは化け物の仕業であろう」と、薄どろどろと震え上がり、高慢な目つきで毒づいていたが、よく聞けば薄どろどろという音は相撲の太鼓で、中入り後の面白い最中に、谷風と小野川が百手をくだいて取り組んでいるのであった。それを聞いて「さてさて面白いこと」と拳を握り、目を離さずに見つめて、思わず大小を端に投げ捨てたところ、鞘が走って二人の額に当たってしまった。
大いに腹を立て、今にも掴みかかって殺さんばかりの気配で、一世一代の恐ろしい目つきで、名にし負う二人にかがまり、一生懸命に謝り、ようやくのことで勘弁してもらえば、夢から覚めたような気分になった。
されども谷風と小野川の体格は二百五十分（約十両）もあるので、一杯分の得である。

Though it is said that "a respectable man does not speak of supernatural phenomena," claiming he had never experienced anything unseemly or frightening, a certain samurai came with a hundred mon, ready to be deceived.
As he waited expectantly, the sound of drums could be heard from somewhere. "Surely this must be the work of supernatural creatures," he thought, trembling fearfully and glaring arrogantly with venomous looks. But when he listened carefully, the rumbling sound was actually sumo drums, and during the exciting intermission, the great wrestlers Tanikaze and Onogawa were grappling with tremendous force.
Hearing this, he exclaimed "How fascinating!" and clenched his fists, staring intently without taking his eyes away. In his excitement, he carelessly tossed his swords aside, but the scabbard flew off and struck both wrestlers on their foreheads.
They became greatly enraged, seeming ready to grab and kill him at any moment. With the most terrifying expressions of their lives, he cowered before these two famous wrestlers, apologizing desperately. Only with great difficulty did he obtain their forgiveness, and then he felt as if awakening from a dream.
However, since Tanikaze and Onogawa's physiques were worth about 250 bu (roughly ten ryō), it was quite a profitable encounter.
