現代語訳
隠居老後の楽しみに一両で奢ろうと思い、千両富の札を一両で買ったところ、運良く当たって千両を手に入れたので、百両を奉納金として納め、残りの九百両で金無垢の阿弥陀仏を一体注文し、水晶の数珠を一連、良い品を付けて、残りの金で檀那寺へ釣鐘を納めようと思った。
しかしこれも古臭いやつだから、いっそ大黒天などに祈願すべきだと、吉原へやって来て、松葉屋で一つ見立てて、芸者を買おうと思ったが、まず金を持って帰って、婆さんにも喜ばせようと、猪牙船に乗って帰りかけて、鉄砲洲の沖で暴風に遭い、千両の重みでは舟は小さく、波は激しく、沈みそうだというので、命には代えられないと千両の箱を海へ放り込んだ。
されども吉原で命の洗濯、この奢りばかりでも二両、金というものは大したものである。
英語訳
Thinking to indulge himself with one ryō for the pleasure of his retirement years, he bought a thousand-ryō lottery ticket for one ryō. Fortunately it won, so he obtained a thousand ryō. He donated one hundred ryō as an offering, and with the remaining nine hundred ryō ordered a solid gold Amida Buddha statue, bought a crystal prayer bead rosary of fine quality, and planned to donate a temple bell to his family temple with the remaining money.
But thinking this was all rather old-fashioned, he decided he should instead pray to Daikokuten and such deities, so he came to Yoshiwara. At Matsubaya he intended to select a courtesan and buy her services, but first thinking to take the money home to make his old wife happy too, he boarded a choki boat to return home. On the way, caught in a storm off Teppōzu, with the weight of the thousand ryō the boat was too small and the waves too rough, threatening to sink, so saying "nothing is worth more than life," he threw the box of thousand ryō into the sea.
Even so, cleansing one's spirit at Yoshiwara, just this indulgence alone costs two ryō - money is indeed a powerful thing.
