序
ここに化け物の皮衣があり、その趣向は甚だ古臭く垢がついて汚れ、裂けてほころびているので、つづれ織りの錦で繕うこともできないとして、古着屋に与えて一身の夕飯代に替えてしまった。古着屋はこれを洗濯して、化け物の皮を化け物の面白い話に張り替えて、古い手法で翻案したのは、芝居の混沌や遊郭の粋な様子を、たちまち相応しくない浅黄色に染めることとなってしまった。それゆえ、魍魎をも模様絵に書き替えて、見る人を化かそうとすることを、ひたすらお許しいただきたくお願い申し上げます。

Preface
Here there was a garment made of monster hide, whose design was extremely old-fashioned, stained with grime, torn and frayed, so that it could not be mended even with patchwork brocade. Thus it was given to a secondhand clothes dealer and exchanged for the price of a single evening meal. The used clothing merchant washed it and transformed the monster's hide into entertaining tales of supernatural beings, adapting it with old techniques. However, this resulted in dyeing the sophistication of theatrical chaos and the refinement of the pleasure quarters in an unsuitably pale yellow color. Therefore, I have rewritten even demons and spirits as decorative illustrations, and humbly beg your forgiveness for attempting to deceive the readers in this way.
