**[Right folio]** I say this merely as a supplement, and I do not presume to consider myself superior to the great masters who came before me. I rely upon those masters to endorse and confirm this work, in the hope that those who come after will harbor no doubt or uncertainty. Nor do I dare presume that it is entirely free of error; rather than considering myself correct, I have broadly sought the counsel of those in the world who are well versed in the study of materia medica [lit. "those skilled in the red whip," an allusion to Shennong], striving forward until this work was brought to completion. Thus I write this preface. On the day of the Winter Solstice, in the year Tsuchinoe-Ne (Boshi) of the Bunsei era [1828], Kanen, Iwasaki Tsunemasa **[Left folio]** **General Principles (Hanrei)** Item 1: This book follows the classification of the *Bencao Gangmu* (本草綱目), and begins by recording the mountain herbs (山草) first, because herbs and plants are the most numerous among medicinal items, and moreover this section was the first to be completed. As for illustrations of water, fire, metals and minerals, birds and beasts, insects and fish, and so forth, these could not yet be fully compiled, and are reserved for a later date. Item 2: Although China has works illustrating medicinal items—such as the *Beiji Bencao* (備急本草), the *Erya Tu* (爾雅図), the *Sancai Tuhui* (三才図絵), and the *Miden Kakkyō* (秘伝花鏡)—they are all rough and imprecise, and are unable to faithfully render the true appearance of the plants. Similarly, works from our own country such as *Yamasachi* (山幸), *Noyama Sōkaki* (野山草花彙), and other picture albums, mostly lack the application of color, or, even where color has been applied, fail to capture the true likeness. None of these can be relied upon. This illustrated compendium, comparing the forms of both [Chinese and Japanese works]...
