(Continued from previous page) ...the forms and varieties of both [Chinese and Japanese specimens], depicting in faithful life-drawings rendered in the double-outline (*sōkō*) style, and having skilled craftsmen engrave and print them. Furthermore, painters were separately commissioned to apply color, so that those who consult this work will not mistake the true appearance of each plant. However, since commissioning painters to apply color entails enormous expense, the colored editions will be made available only upon request from those who wish to purchase them.
Item 3: This book places primary emphasis on illustrations, with explanatory text kept brief. At the top, the Chinese name (*kanmei*) is given; below it are recorded the old Japanese name, regional dialect names, the currently common name, and for each country and locality: the form, color, taste and smell, roots, stems, flowers, fruits, and the season of growth — all with the aim of enabling readers to identify each plant with ease.
Item 4: For those specimens from China and Japan that could be directly observed and depicted from life, all were drawn in this manner. For exotic foreign products (*banbutsu*) — such as *kanshō* (spikenard), *ukon-kō* (tulip), *niku-zuku* (nutmeg), *chōkō* (clove), and the like — these were supplemented by

illustrations from the Western botanical pictorial work *Phytanthoza Iconographia* [*Weinmann*; rendered phonetically as 印忙, "Weinman"], held in the collection of Udagawa Yōan. Furthermore, where both Chinese and Japanese varieties exist but are few in number, while the Dutch varieties are more numerous, these too have been included, with the name of the book and the Western name (*banmei*) recorded for each. Also, even for plants that are produced in Japan, where the illustration was made by another person, the source is noted alongside.
Item 5: The reason vernacular kana glosses (*kokujibōchū*) have been added throughout this book is the desire that even woodcutters, fishermen, and carpenters may instantly and easily identify the plants. However, as the prose is clumsy and crude, there may be passages where an attempt to clarify has instead obscured, or where an attempt to correct has instead introduced error. It is my sincere hope that knowledgeable gentlemen of discernment will be so kind as to correct these.
