宝井其角（たからゐきかく）が鍾馗（しやうき）の自画賛（じぐわさん）を覧（み）はべりしに
今こゝに團十郎（だんじうらう）や鬼（おに）は外（そと）
といへる発句（ほつく）なり夫（それ）鍾馗（しやうき）は疫鬼（えきき）を譲（はら）ふ【ママ、攘ふ】の術（じゆつ）あり俳優（わざおき）
團十郎は其名（そのな）高（たか）く異域（ゐいき）に聞（きこ）ゆ就中（なかんづく）英武勇者（ゑいぶゆうしや）の所作（しよさ）
に妙（めう）を得（え）て怨敵退治（おんできたいぢ）の分形（ありさま）を芸（げい）とす鍾馗の邪気（じやき）を
退（のぞ）くの事（こと）によく肖（に）たればこれを賞（せう）したる晋子（しんし）が当意（とうゐ）
即妙（しくめう）の作意（さくゐ）彼此（かれこれ）を感（かん）じて此（この）草子（さうし）の趣向（しゆかう）とはなしぬ

宝井其角が鍾馗の自画賛を見たところ、
今ここに團十郎や鬼は外
という発句であった。そもそも鍾馗は疫病神を払う術がある。俳優の
團十郎はその名が高く、異国にまで聞こえている。とりわけ英雄・武勇者の演技
に巧みで、怨敵退治の様子を芸とする。鍾馗が邪気を
退ける事によく似ているので、これを賞賛した其角の機転の利いた
絶妙な作意に、あれこれと感動して、この草子の趣向としたのである。

When I viewed Takarai Kikaku's self-painted praise of Zhong Kui,
Now here, Danjūrō! "Demons, begone!"
was the hokku verse. Indeed, Zhong Kui possesses the art of expelling plague demons. The actor
Danjūrō's fame is so great that it is known even in foreign lands. Particularly in performing
heroic warriors, he excels in skill, making it his art to portray the defeat of vengeful enemies.
Since this closely resembles Zhong Kui's expelling of evil spirits,
Kikaku's witty and
exquisite creative intent in praising this moved me in various ways, and I made it the theme of this illustrated book.
