そもそも天の災いでさえ避けることができると言われているのに、地の災いもまた同じであろう。しかしながら弘化四年丁未年(1847年)三月二十四日夜四つ時頃から信州・越後で大地震が発生し、とりわけ善光寺のあたりは激しく、堂塔・末社・寺院その他民家が多数出火により焼失し、山崩れによって洪水が起こり、圧死したり火災で焼かれたり水に溺れるなどして人馬等の死亡者は数え切れないほどであった。東は丹波島・川中島・松代・屋代・戸倉・坂木・上田のあたりが特に激しく、街道の岩石等が揺り出され大地も裂けて通行が困難となった。特にその年は善光寺の開帳があって遠近の男女が群集し、旅籠屋の宿泊客が心配になるほどの人数であったのに、旅館が一時に倒壊し、

It is said that even heavenly disasters can be avoided, so earthly calamities should be the same. However, on the night of March 24th in the 4th year of Kōka, year of the Metal Sheep (1847), around the hour of the Rat (around 10 PM), a great earthquake struck Shinshū and Echigo provinces. The area around Zenkōji Temple was particularly severely affected, with numerous temple halls, subsidiary shrines, temples, and private houses destroyed by fires that broke out. Mountain collapses caused flooding, and the casualties from being crushed, burned by fire, or drowned were countless among both people and horses. To the east, the areas of Tanbajima, Kawanakajima, Matsushiro, Yashiro, Togura, Sakaki, and Ueda were especially severely affected. Rocks along the highways were shaken loose, the earth cracked open, making travel difficult.
