たちまち火が燃え上がり、すべて焼失し、負傷者が多数出て、その騒動は言葉では表現できないほどであった。しかしながら善光寺本堂は別条がなかったため、堂内で通夜をしていた者は一人も怪我をしなかった。越後・上州も震動により出火し、大河の出水があり、まさに水火の責めというべき状況であった。真田の城下町では大地が裂け、家屋百七十八軒が潰れ、人数六十人ほどが行方不明となった。飯山城下でも大きな山崩れが起こった。尾張国の人で善光寺参詣のため同夜宿泊していた者もあり、帰国した者もいて話はまちまちである。府下の死亡者は二十六人とのことで、古来未曾有の大変事である。
四月三日の届け出
私の代官所で当分預かっている信濃国高井郡・水内郡の村々の件について、今月二十四日夜戌の刻頃から上州にかけて大地震が発生し、翌二十五日卯の刻にようやく鎮まったところ、地面が割れ裂け、泥水が吹き出し、潰れた家屋や人・牛馬の死失が多く、家族全員が死絶した者もおり、負傷者は非常に多く、一村すべてが潰れ家となった村もある。前代未聞の変事であるとの報告が次々と届いているため、急いで手代たちを派遣している。なお、陣屋のある中野村については損壊した家屋等があった程度で、陣屋も別条ない。詳細については追って申し上げるが、まずはこの件をご報告申し上げる。以上

Fires immediately erupted and everything was burned down completely. There were numerous injured people, and the commotion was beyond description. However, since the main hall of Zenkōji Temple was unharmed, not a single person keeping vigil inside the hall was injured. Echigo and Jōshū provinces also experienced fires from the tremors and flooding from major rivers - truly what could be called an ordeal of water and fire. In the castle town of Sanada, the ground split open, 178 houses collapsed, and about 60 people went missing. In Iiyama castle town as well, a great landslide occurred. There were also people from Owari Province who had been staying overnight for pilgrimage to Zenkōji Temple that same night, and some returned home with various accounts. The death toll in the metropolitan area was said to be 26 people - an unprecedented disaster since ancient times.
Report of April 3rd
Regarding the villages of Takai and Minochi districts in Shinano Province, which are currently under the jurisdiction of my magistrate's office: Starting around the hour of the Dog on the night of the 24th of this month, a great earthquake occurred extending to Jōshū Province, and it finally subsided around the middle of the hour of the Rabbit on the 25th. The ground cracked and split, muddy water gushed out, there were many collapsed houses and deaths of people, cattle and horses, and there were cases where entire families perished. The number of injured was enormous, and there were villages where every house in the village collapsed. As reports continue to arrive stating this was an unprecedented calamity, I have urgently dispatched my deputies. Furthermore, regarding Nakano Village where the magistrate's office is located, there were some damaged houses but the office building itself was unharmed. I will report the details later, but first I submit this preliminary report. The above.
