にしつかりして出なと云し
に皆はら〳〵と走り東門を出て畑有る芝原
に止り佇む此所人少シ哀れなるかな中にハ襦袢一枚或は
赤裸の者も有てふへ〳〵と居り泣叫ふ声のミおたゝし
浅ましなといふもおろかなり此処にて夜を明し畑をつた
ひ堤を行に地さ裂壱尺程つゝ口あきたる所数ヶ所有りこれにも
膽を冷し又焼死の人の臭気いぶせく寺より一里はかりの
程ハ人々逃よ〳〵また地震のせんするそと呼はり〳〵気を
もみ走るなんとまた大方ならすと広吉母帰りて

現代語訳
にしっかりして出ないと言うので、皆ばらばらと走り、東門を出て畑のある芝原に止まり佇みました。この所に人は少なく、哀れなことに、中には襦袢一枚、あるいは全裸の者もいて震え上がって座り、泣き叫ぶ声のみ聞こえて恐ろしく、浅ましいというのも愚かなほどです。ここで夜を明かし、畑を伝い堤を行くと、地が裂けて一尺程ずつ口を開けた所が数ヶ所あり、これにも肝を冷やしました。また焼死した人の臭気が鬱陶しく、寺より一里ほどの間は人々が「逃げよ逃げよ、また地震が襲ってくるぞ」と呼ばわりながら気を揉んで走る有様は、また大変なものでした、と広吉の母が帰って物語しました。

When they said "stay firm and don't go out," everyone scattered and ran, exiting through the east gate and stopping to stand in the grassy field where there were farms. There were few people in this place, and pitifully, among them were those wearing only underwear or even completely naked, sitting there shivering, with only the sound of crying and screaming audible - it was terrifying and wretched beyond description. They spent the night here, and when they traveled along the fields and embankments, there were several places where the ground had split open about one foot wide, which also chilled them to the bone. The stench of those who had burned to death was oppressive, and for about one ri from the temple, people were running about anxiously, calling out "flee, flee, another earthquake is coming!" - it was truly extraordinary, so said Hirokichi's mother when she returned and told her story.
