人之数不知先達而地震之節之死人よりも十倍二も及可
申哉大変二御座候夫より平一面水二相成飯山御城内江
押入越後境より三口二水入小倉十日町辺平一面大満
水長岡并新潟表江水入大満水莫大之事中々筆二ハ書
写かたく次第二御座候此度信濃国之大変誠二咄より大
成事二御座候右申上候十里之間湖水にて村々水底に
相成数百余ヶ村二御座候然ㇽ二廿四日五ッ半時頃より当十
三日七ッ時まて十九日之間信濃川之水溜り大海之如く
御座候処三日の間二不残水引候故其音雷ゟ大二天地も一同
二相成事かと被存候丹波嶋辺川中嶋善光寺辺松代中
野須坂飯山御城下辺平一面大海二相成家々不残流死
人数不知神武此方珍敷事二付其外善光寺并北国筋往
来人死人数不知夥敷天災二御座候此度之水難信濃国の
山方にて場広き所二御座候得者廿万石余之田地潰申候
中々難書記荒々申上候
現代語訳
人の数は分からないが、先達ての地震の節の死人よりも十倍にも及ぶ
であろうかという大変な事態でございます。それより平地一面が水となり、飯山御城内へ
押し入り、越後境より三箇所に水が入り、小倉・十日町辺りの平地一面が大満
水となり、長岡並びに新潟表へ水が入って大満水となり、莫大なこと、とても筆には書き
写しがたい次第でございます。この度の信濃国の大変は誠に話よりも大
変なことでございます。右に申し上げました十里の間が湖水となり、村々が水底に
なり、数百余ヶ村でございます。しかるに二十四日五つ半時頃より当十
三日七つ時まで十九日の間、信濃川の水が溜まり大海のよう
でございました処、三日の間にすべて水が引きました故、その音は雷よりも大きく、天地も一緒
になることかと存ぜられました。丹波島辺り、川中島、善光寺辺り、松代、中
野、須坂、飯山御城下辺りの平地一面が大海となり、家々がすべて流れ、死
人数は分からず、神代このかた珍しいことにつき、その外善光寺並びに北国筋往
来の人の死人数も分からないほど夥しい天災でございます。この度の水難は信濃国の
山方にて場所が広い所でございます故、二十万石余りの田地が潰れ申しました。
とても書き記し難く、荒々しく申し上げ候。

The number of people [who died] is unknown, but it would likely be ten times greater than the deaths from the previous earthquake - a truly extraordinary disaster. From then on, the entire plain became water, rushing into Iiyama Castle, entering at three points from the Echigo border. The entire plain around Ogura and Tōkamachi was completely flooded, and water entered Nagaoka and the Niigata area, causing massive flooding. The scale was so enormous that it is truly difficult to put into writing. This great disaster in Shinano Province was truly more severe than any account could convey. As mentioned above, the ten ri stretch became a lake, with villages submerged underwater - several hundred villages in total. However, from around the fifth and half hour on the 24th until the seventh hour on the 13th - for nineteen days - the waters of the Shinano River accumulated like a great sea, but then all the water receded within three days. The sound was louder than thunder, making us think that heaven and earth might become one. The areas around Tanba Island, Kawanakajima, near Zenkōji Temple, Matsushiro, Naka-
no, Suzaka, and around Iiyama castle town - the entire plain became like a great sea, with all houses swept away. The number of deaths is unknown - such an unprecedented event since the age of the gods. In addition, the number of deaths among travelers on the Zenkōji and Hokurikudō routes is also unknown - truly a tremendous natural disaster. This flood disaster occurred in the mountainous areas of Shinano Province where the land is extensive, so over 200,000 koku worth of rice fields were destroyed. It is truly difficult to record everything, so I report this roughly.
