Toyotomi Hideugu's residual mansion was granted by the Toyotomi lord to our domain founder, and [the founder] was entrusted with the protection of Lord Hideyori. The author's note states: "Upon examination, many manuscripts record that Niikawa District was granted in Bunroku 3, but this is incorrect. This was because in the 7th month of this year, following Lord Hideugu's forced suicide, the Toyotomi lord entrusted our domain founder with the protection of Lord Hideyori, and was to grant the three provinces of Mino, Owari, and Ise as Hideugu's former domains to our domain founder. One manuscript adds Mikawa and Iga to make it five provinces. However, because Ishida [Mitsunari] and Masuda [Nagamori] obstructed and prevented this, instead Hideugu's mansion and the single district of Niikawa were granted," and so forth.
These various legends differ, and since there is no clear evidence in the various records of the former domain, perhaps what the various old records record is not uniform.
One, according to my [Heiji's] examination, the historical record of Hōfuku Temple at Asukeyama in Niikawa District, Etchu Province, from Jōkyō 2 states: "During the Tenshō years, Sassa Naizen-no-suke [Narimasa] was stationed at Toyama Castle. When Taikō [Hideyoshi] dispatched troops for conquest and established camp at Ofukuyama, the head priest brought prayer tablets, sacred sake, and other items to present them. At that time, Naizen-no-suke surrendered. Because of this, [Hideyoshi] was greatly pleased and donated 100 hyō of land as lamp-lighting fields for the main deity Kannon. However, afterward when Lord Toshiie came to rule the domain, the lamp-lighting fields were confiscated, and the priests served as farmers and performed various duties alongside them. During the Bunroku years when Taikō dispatched troops for the Korean campaign, the head priest was to serve as a laborer for the Korean campaign, so he traveled to Fushimi and through Kō-zōsu made a petition. Regarding the previous precedent of donating lamp-lighting fields, there was notification from Kō-zōsu. Therefore, Bun-
