The magistrates Lord Honda Nakatsukasa-no-taifu, Lord Matsudaira Buzen-no-kami, and Lord Matsudaira Ukyo-no-suke [suffered] complete destruction by fire. Among all other government office locations, not a single place remains intact. Therefore, on the afternoon of the 3rd, Enkyoji urgently went to Lord Kuze Yamato-no-kami, who was on duty, to inquire after [the shogun's] well-being. Subsequently, he fulfilled his duties by visiting the five magistrate residences. Yesterday on the 4th, Harayama Naiki served as messenger to offer condolences to His Highness of Nikko and the Three Branch Houses [of the Tokugawa]. Now, on the night of the 2nd, there were reportedly over ninety sources of fire in total. The number of immediate deaths is said to exceed ten thousand. I have been informed that particularly within the castle and at samurai residences, the deaths among female attendants were extremely numerous. For now, I urgently report these matters.
