現代語訳

その夏の頃、舟を出し、同じ年の秋、八月に日本に帰朝された。この年、日本は平城天皇の大同元年であった。空海の御年は三十三歳。やがて帝に参内されたところ、ますます重用されたので、すなわち僧都の官位に任ぜられ、唐の様子について、詳細に勅問がある。空海は事細かく御物語をされた。

英語訳

Around that summer, he set sail, and in the autumn of the same year, in the eighth month, he returned to Japan. In Japan, this year was the first year of Daidō during the reign of Emperor Heizei. Kūkai was thirty-three years of age. When he soon had an audience with the emperor, he was increasingly favored, so he was appointed to the official rank of sōzu (deputy chief priest). There were detailed imperial inquiries about the conditions in Tang China. Kūkai gave detailed accounts of everything.
