をよそ仏法（ぶつほう）の深理（しんり）といふは。言語（ごんこ）みち
たえて。ふるなのべんもとくべからず。心（しん）
行（ぎやう）おもひきえて。しやりしか智（ち）もはからふ
べからず。しらじ〳〵ほとけもしらじ。われも
しらず。天 真（しん）どくらうとして。さらにほとり
なく。地 性唯空（しやうゆいくう）にして。又そこなし。此 無相（むさう）の
中におゐて。りやくまち〳〵にきどく。さま
ざまなり。ほんてう。しやう来（らい）の。ほうもん。八 家（け）

弘法大師御本地巻之上

そもそも仏法の深い真理というものは、言葉では表現し尽くすことができず、古今の弁論家といえども説くことはできない。心の働きや修行も思考を超越しており、舎利子のような智者でも推し量ることはできない。仏も知らず、我々も知らない。天の本性は独立自在であり、まったく境界がなく、地の性質は唯空であって、また底もない。この無相の境地において、利益はさまざまに現れ、奇特な働きも多種多様である。我が国に伝来した仏法の法門は八宗である。

The Original Ground of Kōbō Daishi, Volume One

The profound principles of Buddhism cannot be fully expressed in words, and even the greatest orators of past and present cannot adequately expound them. Mental activities and practices transcend thought, and even wise ones like Śāriputra cannot fathom them. Neither the Buddha knows, nor do we know. The true nature of heaven is independent and free, completely without boundaries, and the nature of earth is nothing but emptiness, also without foundation. Within this realm of no-characteristics, benefits manifest in various ways, and miraculous workings take countless forms. The Buddhist teachings that have been transmitted to our country comprise eight schools.
