現代語訳

九宗、いずれも事理を備え、頓漸の教えを立てて一心の源に帰ろうとしている。中でも特に、かの真言秘密乗は、昔大日如来が説かれた妙義であり、南天鉄塔の中で龍猛菩薩が金剛薩埵から受け継がれた。胎蔵界と金剛界両部の秘法が、初めて人間界に伝わり、般若三蔵によって中国に広まることができた。今この日本に伝わって、秘密灌頂真言の印が今に及ぶことは、その源を尋ねると、空海和尚に始まったのである。

その俗姓を尋ねると、讃岐国多度郡屏風ヶ浦という所に、佐伯田公という人がいた。妻の阿刀氏は、ある夜の夢に、一人の御僧があった。年は八十余りに見えなさるが、手に払子を握られ、妻に語っておっしゃるには、「私は仏法を日本に広めて、衆生を導き、天下を守ろうと思う。願わくは、あなたの胎内をお貸しください」とあったので、阿刀氏は

The nine schools all possess both phenomenal and noumenal aspects, establishing gradual and sudden teachings to return to the source of one mind. Among these, particularly the esoteric Shingon vehicle represents the profound teachings expounded long ago by Dainichi Nyorai. Within the Iron Stupa of South India, Bodhisattva Nagarjuna received these from Vajrasattva. The secret teachings of both the Womb and Diamond Realms were first transmitted to the human world and spread to China through the Tripitaka Master Prajna. That these have now been transmitted to Japan, with the secret initiations and mudras of Shingon continuing to this day, can be traced back to its origin in the monk Kukai.

When we investigate his secular origins, in Sanuki Province, in the district of Tado, at a place called Byobu-ga-ura, there was a man named Saeki no Takimi. His wife, of the Ato clan, had a dream one night in which there appeared a monk. He appeared to be over eighty years old, holding a fly-whisk in his hand.
