児すでに十二才。桓武（くはんむ）天 皇（わう）延暦（えんりやく）四年の春のころ。
母のこのかみ従（しゆ）四 位（ゐ）下。阿刀（あと）の大足（おほたり）といふ人は。児
のためには外舅（おぢ）なり。当時（たうじ）ならびなき大 学（かく）
の博士（はかせ）也けれは。これにしたがひて。学文（がくもん）をさせ
らるゝに。一たび聞て又とはず。一をさづくる
に。其 理（り）二三に通じ。文学（ぶんがく）まことに底をき
はめて。おなじき十年に其とし。十八才にし
て大学のかみにのぼる。しかりといへども儒書（じゆしよ）
をたうとむの思ひなく。たゞ其心ざし仏経（ぶつきやう）
をよまんことをのみ。常にたえず。こゝに石淵（いはふち）

寺【岩渕寺】の勤操（こんさう）大徳は。いづみの国の槙の尾の山寺にお
はしませしころ。このところにたづね入て。虚（こ）
空蔵（くうざう）求聞持（ぐもんじ）の法（ほう）をうけて昼夜（ちうや）にこれを行
し。此とし髪（かみ）をおろし。沙弥（しやみ）の十 戒（かい）をうけて教（けう）
海沙弥（かいしやみ）とぞ申ける。後にみづから名をかへて。如空（によくう）
阿闍梨（あじやり）とそ申ける。延暦（ゑんりやく）十四年に東（とう）大寺（じ）の
壇（だん）にのほりて。具足戒（ぐそくかい）をうけ。此日又みづから
名をあらためて。空海（くうかい）とぞつき給ひける。すな
はち仏前（ぶつせん）にむかひて大 誓願（せいくはん）をおこしていは
く。われ一 代（だい）蔵経（ざうきやう）十二 部（ぶ）の中（なか）に。心のうたがひい

現代語訳

児はすでに十二歳になっていた。桓武天皇の延暦四年の春の頃のことである。
母の兄で従四位下の阿刀大足という人は、児にとっては叔父にあたる。当時並ぶ者のない大学の博士であったので、この人に従って学問をさせることになった。一度聞けば二度と問い直すことはなく、一つを授けると、その理を二つ三つに通じて理解し、文学は本当に奥底まで極めて、同じく延暦十年、その歳十八歳で大学の長官に昇進した。しかしながら儒書を尊ぶ思いはなく、ただその心志は仏経を読むことのみを、常に絶えず願っていた。ここに石淵寺（岩渕寺）の勤操大徳は、和泉国の槙尾山の山寺にいらっしゃった頃、この所を訪ね入って、虚空蔵求聞持の法を受けて昼夜にこれを修行した。この年に髪を下ろし、沙弥の十戒を受けて教海沙弥と申した。後に自ら名を改めて、如空阿闍梨と申した。延暦十四年に東大寺の戒壇に上って、具足戒を受け、この日また自ら名を改めて、空海と名づけられた。すなわち仏前に向かって大誓願を起こして言うことには、「我は一代蔵経十二部の中に、心の疑いが...」

The child was already twelve years old. This was around the spring of the fourth year of Enryaku during Emperor Kanmu's reign.
His mother's elder brother, Ato no Otari, who held the court rank of Junior Fourth Rank Lower Grade, was the child's uncle. Since he was an unparalleled doctoral scholar of the Imperial University at that time, the child was placed under his tutelage to study. Once he heard something, he never needed to ask again; when taught one thing, he could understand the principle in two or three different ways. His literary learning truly reached the very depths, and in the tenth year of Enryaku, at the age of eighteen, he was promoted to head of the Imperial University. However, he had no inclination to revere Confucian texts; his heart's desire was solely and constantly to read Buddhist scriptures. At this time, the great virtue Gonzo of Ishifuchi Temple (Iwafuchi Temple), when he was residing at the mountain temple of Makino-o in Izumi Province, sought out this place and received the Akashagarbha memory-retention dharma, which he practiced day and night. In this year, he shaved his hair and received the ten precepts of a novice monk, taking the name Kyokai Shami. Later he changed his name to Nyoku Ajari. In the fourteenth year of Enryaku, he ascended to the ordination platform of Todai-ji Temple and received full ordination, and on this day he again changed his name to Kukai. Then, facing before the Buddha, he made a great vow, saying: "Among all the Tripitaka scriptures of one lifetime, the twelve divisions, my heart's doubts..."
