なみ二三日かほとは家の内に寐る人なく或は大

にしつまりて七八度はかり三四度になる事も

並びに二、三日ほどは家の内に寝る人なく、ある人は大寺の境内に移り、あるいは洛外の河原へ移り、西なる野辺に集まって夜を明かした。このようにして三日四日過ぎても、なおその名残の小さき震いが時々あり、初めは昼夜に二十度もあったが、次第に静まって七八度ほど、三四度になることもあった。しかしながら今日既に二十日余りを経たけれども、なお折々少しずつの震いも止まず、皆人々の惑い恐れることである。世の諺に「地震は初め激しく、大風は中程強く、雷は末ほど甚だし」と

言える事をもって、初めの程の大震はないこととしているけれども、なお婦女子小児の類はいかがかと安心し兼ねて、「いかがでしょうか」と尋ねる人が多いので、旧記を記して大震の後小震ありて止まざる例を挙げて人の心を安らかにしようと記し申し上げる。

For about two or three days, no one slept inside their houses; some moved to the precincts of great temples, others relocated to riverbanks outside the capital, and they gathered in the western fields to pass the nights. Even after three or four days had passed in this manner, there were still occasional small aftershocks from the remnants, which initially occurred as many as twenty times day and night, but gradually subsided to about seven or eight times, sometimes three or four times. However, even now that more than twenty days have already passed, the occasional slight tremors have not ceased, and all people remain confused and fearful. There is a popular saying that "earthquakes are severe at the beginning, strong winds are powerful in the middle, and thunder is most fierce at the end."

Based on this saying, people assume there will be no more great earthquakes like those at the beginning, but since women and children still cannot feel at ease and many people ask "How will it be?", I record these old chronicles and cite examples of small earthquakes continuing after great earthquakes to put people's minds at ease.
Regarding earthquakes that have occurred since ancient times, as far as can be seen in the national histories, they are recorded in detail in the disaster and anomaly section of volume 171 of the Ruijū Kokushi.
